Jeremiah Hess 1675-1739

Birth: 1675
Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
Death: Apr. 28, 1739
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA

On August 29, 1730, Jeremias Hess (about 55 at the time) arrived in Philadelphia aboard the “Thistle of Glasgow”, which had sailed from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with his wife Anna Maria HEIM Hess and his 4 surviving children: Peter (about 27), Eva (about 20), Johann Conrad (about 16), and Balthasar (about 13). Later that year, Jeremias Hess appeared as the baptismal sponsor of a child of Johan Georg Schweinhart at Falckner Swamp in what is now Montgomery County, outside of Philadelphia.

On Sept. 9, 1734, Jeremias received a warrant for 100 acres of land in Philadelphia County. Jeremias and his family eventually settled in Salford in Philadelphia County. By the time Jeremias wrote his will in Salford on April 28, 1739, Peter and Eva had moved to Maryland. Johann Conrad and Balthasar remained in eastern Pennsylvania. Jeremias died at about 68 years of age, before April 11, 1743, when his will was probated.

Jeremias may be buried in the “Old Goshenhopen Cemetery”, near Woxall, Montgomery County, PA., or “Falkners Swamp Cemetery”, Hanover, Montgomery County, PA. However, 85% of the grave markers in those cemeteries are unreadable so we may need to find him through other records.

  1. Very nicely written! I am researching this family as they are one of the first families (ancestors of mine) who immigrated to America. Would you happen to have any info regarding their location in Ireland? They apparently lost two children (Elizabeth age 3 and Johann Conrad age 6 years) in 1711 in Ireland. I cannot find a death certificate for these children and wondered what they died of. Have seen some info on how rough it was for them in the UK and Ireland. It seems they only stayed for a couple of years and then made their way back to Germany (may have spent some time in the Netherlands) and then boarded the Thistle of Glasgow (I find him listed on the Passenger list) and arriving in Philadelphia Aug 29, 1730. I show his date of death as 1739 in Philadelphia (I may have a source for that, if you are interested). Kindly let me know if you have add’l information. I am in the process of making a research board for a genealogy seminar Aug 2015.
    Many thanks!

    • Donna,
I don’t have any other information than what is on the page. I’ll let you know if I find anything about Ireland. Lately I’ve been pretty stymied by overseas research. There are some sites, but they require a membership and I can’t afford to join at the present.

Let me know about your research board next month.

      • I am related to the Hess’s through Jeremiah. Some of the trees on Ancestry have connected the family to the “Esse” family who were knighted, have you ever run into this information? Somehow it doesn’t seem to fit. Thanks so much.

      • I haven’t seen that yet, but I tend to take a skeptical view of relatives who others claim to be knighted or are kings, queens etc. until I can verify it for sure.

If I find anything about us being related to a knight, I’ll let you know.

      • Hi Rita,

        Sorry for the delayed response.

No, I have not come across “Esse” family name as a connection for us. I don’t think that is correct. Haven’t done much with my genealogy since our program in August. I have been busy with DAR. Did you ask me about Jeremiah’s death certificate or record? To date, I have not located a record. What I have found is that Jeremiah’s son, Conrad (my line) was the Executor of his Will. I found a Will Abstract (Ancestory), Philadelphia county with the dates of April 28, 1739 and/or April 28, 1743. Some time ago, I emailed a Robert Hess who provided info on “Find a Grave”. To date, I have not heard from him. Hope all is well! I’ll get back to it one of these days. Best Regards, Donna Heverly Stockbridge

  2. My info shows they arrived in England on 6/2/1709 per a list of Palatinates. On the list, Jeremiah was listed as a Husbandman and Vinedresser age 34 with a wife and three children.
In 1711, they lost two children, Johan Conrad and Elizabeth in Ireland. I have searched some for death records but have not found them. Curious to find what the children died of… most likely illness. It looks as though, that same year (1711) they returned to the Palatinate where they had three more children. I believe it was June 1730 they went to Rotterdam and boarded Thistle of Glasgow to sail to America. They arrived Aug 29, 1730 in Philadelphia. I show them on the ships list. Unfortunately, I do not have death record for Jeremias “Jeremiah” (note: also listed as “Jeremy” when he arrived in England). Some notes say he may have been buried at Old Goshenhopen Cemetery, Woxall or Falkner’s Swamp Cemetery in New Hanover. I added a request on billiongraves.com for photo of headstone at either cemetery. No luck with church records. To note: both of those cemeteries have churches and I looked but could not find death record. I’ve hit a brick wall, sorry to say. Findagrave.com does have a info there with cemetery info but “85% of the graves are unreadable, may need to find him through other records”.
